What to Put on a Hang Tag: A Front and Back Checklist

The information buyers look for on a hang tag, where each item goes, and what belongs on the sewn-in label instead.

Quick answer: Put your brand name or logo on the front of a hang tag, and the price, size, barcode and SKU on the back. A short brand story, care highlights and a website or QR code are optional extras. Legally required details such as fibre content and country of origin must also be on a permanent sewn-in label, not only on the hang tag.

Front vs back

Think of the front as the shop window and the back as the information desk.

  • Front: logo or brand name, and nothing that competes with it. A tagline or pattern is fine if the logo still dominates.
  • Back: everything the customer or the store needs to sell the product: price, size, barcode, SKU, colour, website.
  • Need more room? A booklet hang tag adds pages for a brand story, size guide or care details.

Hang tags are removed after purchase, so legally required information has to stay with the product. In the US that means fibre content, country of origin and the manufacturer or RN number on a label attached to the garment, and care instructions on a permanent label. The EU requires fibre composition on a durable label. See label compliance basics and printed care labels.

Design tips

  • Keep about 10 mm clear around the hole so nothing is torn or hidden. See hang tag sizes.
  • Leave the barcode at full size where possible, and on a white or light background.
  • Choose a stock that matches the brand: coated card for colour, kraft for a natural look, black card with foil for premium.
  • Start from a free hang tag template with bleed and safe zones already set.
Common questions

What to Put on a Hang Tag — FAQ

Does a hang tag need to show fibre content?

Not by itself. In the US, fibre content, country of origin and the manufacturer or RN number must be on a label attached to the garment, and care instructions on a permanent label. A hang tag can repeat this information, but it does not replace the sewn label.

Should the price be printed on the hang tag?

Only if your price is fixed for the whole run. Many brands leave a blank space or use a price sticker so the same tags work for wholesale, retail and sales.

Can I put a QR code on a hang tag?

Yes. Keep it at least about 2 × 2 cm, print it in dark ink on a light background, and leave a clear margin around it so phones can scan it.

What is the smallest readable text on a hang tag?

Around 6 pt for secondary text such as care notes or a website. Keep the brand name and price much larger so they read at arm’s length.
