Hang Tag Sizes: Standard Dimensions and How to Choose

Common sizes in inches and millimetres, which size fits which product, and the hole, margin and barcode measurements printers ask for.

Quick answer: The most common clothing hang tag is 2 × 3.5 in (about 50 × 90 mm), the size of a business card. Jewelry tags run smaller, around 1 × 1.5 in (25 × 38 mm), while outerwear and premium tags go up to about 2.5 × 4 in (63 × 100 mm). Keep text at least 3/8 in (10 mm) away from the hole.

Standard hang tag sizes

There is no single legal standard, but most hang tags fall into a handful of sizes that printers, tagging guns and retail displays all handle well.

How to choose a size

  • Match the product. The tag should be clearly visible but never bigger than the item calls for. A 2 × 3.5 in tag looks right on a shirt and wrong on a ring.
  • Count what goes on it. A logo alone fits on 1.5 × 2 in. Logo, price, size and barcode need 2 × 3 in or larger. A brand story needs 2.5 × 4 in or a booklet tag.
  • Leave room for the barcode. A UPC-A barcode at standard size is about 1.5 in (38 mm) wide. It can usually shrink to around 80% and still scan, but test with your retailer’s scanner. See price and barcode tags.
  • Think about the attachment. Tags on a plastic fastener or safety pin hang flatter when narrow; tags on string can be wider. See strings, pins and fasteners.

Card thickness

Card weightApprox. thicknessFeel and use
250gsm≈ 10–12 ptLight. Fine for small, cheap items; can feel flimsy on apparel
350gsm≈ 14–16 ptThe apparel standard. Sturdy, takes lamination well
400–450gsm≈ 18–20 ptPremium. Holds die-cut shapes and foil
Duplex (two sheets laminated)≈ 24 pt+Luxury feel, contrasting colour on each side

Kraft card runs slightly thicker than coated card at the same weight, and has a natural, uncoated feel. See kraft hang tags.

Hole size and placement

  • Position: centred, about 1/4 in (6 mm) from the top edge, or in a top corner for slim tags.
  • Hole size: about 1/8 in (3 mm) for string, elastic or a plastic fastener. Larger holes or a metal eyelet suit heavy products and thick ribbon.
  • Clear zone: keep text and logos at least 3/8 in (10 mm) from the hole so nothing is torn or hidden.

Artwork margins and bleed

  • Bleed: extend background colour 1/8 in (3 mm) past the cut line on every side.
  • Safe zone: keep text 1/8 in (3 mm) inside the cut line. Rounded corners trim a little more off each corner.
  • Two sides: most apparel tags print both sides: brand on the front, price, size and barcode on the back.
  • File type: vector PDF, AI or SVG. See our artwork preparation guide.
Common questions

Hang Tag Sizes — FAQ

What is the standard hang tag size?

2 × 3.5 inches (about 50 × 90 mm), the same as a business card. It fits a logo, price, size and a barcode, and works on almost any garment.

What size hang tag is best for jewelry?

Around 1 × 1.5 in (25 × 38 mm), or a small 1 in round tag. Anything bigger tends to cover the piece. Use a fine string or an elastic loop.

How thick should a hang tag be?

350gsm coated card (roughly 14–16 pt) is the standard for apparel. Under 250gsm feels flimsy; 400–450gsm feels premium and holds die-cut shapes well.

Where should the hole go on a hang tag?

Centred about 1/4 in (6 mm) from the top edge, with no text or logo within about 3/8 in (10 mm) of it. A standard hole is about 1/8 in (3 mm) for string; use an eyelet for heavy products.

Does a custom size cost more?

No. Any rectangular size within our standard range is the same price. Only custom die-cut outlines add a flat $30 per order.
